Deep Dive on Beyond the Science: Practitioner Pitfalls and Best Practices

Hi!

Are you confident in your knowledge of going Beyond the Science, as seen through the functional medicine lens?

Although you may already be a savvy practitioner, I am certain you will learn something new in this video. You’ll walk away with pages of notes and practical pearls you can use in your practice right away.

Here are some of the things we’ll be discussing:

  • What’s the surprising, single largest choice you can make to set up your patients for more positive (or negative health) outcomes?
  • When and How is the Diagnosis doing more harm than you realize?
  • How to tap into your best (free!) resource to help create sustainable patient results.
  • The top 3 reasons they don’t actually Get Well.
  • If you don’t do ________________ consistently, your ability to help patients is likely going to be cut very short.
  • Are you missing the Forest as you focus on the Trees?
  • The #1 obstacle that gets in the way of patients’ success even for the savviest of practitioners.

Thank you very much for joining in the fun and learning!

With warmth, love, and gratitude to you for sharing your gifts with so many –

Please share your thoughts in the “Ask a Question” area below about what inspired you in this presentation… Include what type of practitioner you are, so that we can all see your unique perspective.

ONe of the more insightful topics that Tracy discussed was around diagnoses and the turning of that discussion into one around “dynamics” that the client is experiencing. This creates an opportunity for them to learn how to improve or even reverse their “type of suffering.” Once people understand this, it connects them to their healing by empowering them.

Loved the part about placebo medications and sham surgery. That’s amazing that sham surgeries lead to better outcomes. So interesting that the more real the surgery felt the better because the body’s nervous system is taking all of that in to convince it happened. Thanks for sharing! Makes me excited to take the placebo class.

WOW
I love the placebo effect it is so true indeed, what you focus on you create!!! I also love the recognition to hypnosis and the holistic ability to heal bones through it. I know that there has been Open surgery in the past with just hypnosis opposed to the anaesthetic. I just love all of it and love all the pearls each month, I also advocate that so many simply google (add 2+2 yet equate 8!!! ) so test don’t guess is Tracys go too and this is totally prevalent for healing your clients

The video was great in addressing the deep need for more coaching, more support, more partnership in helping those struggling with their health. We can be that support, we can provide the partnerships, we can be there to coach them to success. No doubt about it. I’ve had it work on myself and do the work with those trying to conceive naturally. Glad to be part of this ever growing community, Rachel Romaine, FDN-P

I think what I found most inspirational was the reminder of how powerful empathy and really listening to people is. This has really inspired me to be more mindful of this in my own practice! Thank you!!

It isn’t new but what I really needed to hear today was a reminder that it isn’t selfish to take care of yourself. It’s the only way to be able to show up at one’s best. Thank you.

The pearl of wisdom that inspired me the most today is just taking a minute a asking patients how do they actually feel.
I will start implementing that in my practice today.
I ask patients : “How do you feel today?”, but you are right. They are answering with their pain level, and not their emotional state.
Thank you for today’s live stream.

Thank you again for this wonderful reminder on the importance of therapeutic communication! It is so easy to forget about how much human word, touch, and simply listening matters…

The most important wisdom pearl you have shared today ( for me ) was to show the client compassion, to hold space for them to be able to express what they intuitively know to be going on within them. The human body is amazing in healing itself and knowing deep down what is going wrong. Thank you for your passion and for inspiring so many to follow you on this path!

STOP TALKING! I need that reminder:) Thanks Tracy, you are the best!

Thank you for encouraging the use of empathy and positivity in client work as a strength to be celebrated. We must continually inspire our clients to stay the course with working on wellness. I also am fascinated by the scientific research on mind-body connection and had no idea there were sham surgeries that actually produced equal or better results as actual surgeries! Our bodies do have the innate ability to heal and we as practitioners are gifted with a great opportunity to guide our clients to that place.

Dear Tracy, thank you very much for your inspiring talk. There is one particular point that I would take to my practice: “The patients need to be empowered and inspired otherwise that would follow your recommendations out of fear and that’s counterproductive for them,”
Kind regards,

I already knew this but it felt amazing that my thoughts and experience have been confirmed by you in this video about coaching my clients. I love to encourage my clients and always go along with where they are. Some are ready for the hard emotional work and others aren’t ready to touch it yet! So asking the right questions makes the difference for sure. I love that you mentioned that as a coach working on my own feelings and growth will help me understand our own clients and have the empathy I need to hold space for them. I am right there now!! I also love how you mentioned that you need to give the clients tools to help them empower, inspire, and educate them to get healthy and stay healthy and sustain their new habits and lifestyle.
I am so interested in learning more about the amygdala and the Axis in development. I am very interested in how it affects health or illness and emotional maturity as we age? Thank you

I loved the aspect of telling or speaking your truth as a part of the healing process
It is a huge connection. Thank you for bringing that up

This was such a great and important topic! I completely and whole heartedly agree that more compassion needs to be included in our appointments with our clients. I know for myself during the health struggle I had, if any my doctors had not been dismissive and really made an effort to help me through my struggles, I truly believe that it wouldn’t have gotten as bad as it did. I was given a diagnosis and literally nothing else so of course I went down the internet rabbit hole and the doom and gloom information was detrimental to me. I want to learn as much as I can to be a support in every way possible for my clients because I know that if I’m the only one who does that for them, then that can make all the difference in their health journey and I would be more than happy to do so. I loved when you said be the unicorn! It’s so so true! You really need to go against the grain sometimes in order to make great strides. I agree that the client has all the power and I’m simply the guide to use my know how to… Read more »

I loved the reminders on how important shutting my mouth and listening is. At times I think I already know exactly what I’m going to do before letting the client share their full story. It’s important to give them the space for sharing, show empathy, and reassure them healing is possible!

I said it on the live FB thread and I will say it again…not for the reason of getting a free course- I have so much more respect for you Tracy Harrison. Thank you for making a difference <3. The biggest and most important take away when dealing with clients is empowering them with the know-how and the power of the "placebo effect" – it is not woohooo science. It is important and fundamental for patient success and partnership.

Melissa Lee

I like the pearl about communicating in a way that clients/patients are able to understand their suffering, without showcasing too much scientific terms. It goes a long way in their belief that they can heal! And that is more powerful than us practitioners showing off what we know, it’s more about how we can empower them. wow.

Marie Harrison

I’d be worried to build up a client as to how effective our sessions could be (trying to implement the placebo effect) because what if it doesn’t happen? They cold complain that I made comments that I didn’t follow through on (maybe even to my regulating body) or demand their money back. My initial training was to ‘manage expectations’ so that people weren’t expecting anything massive – so this is a big difference from my original learning. I should point out that I have worked with a lot of cancer clients too… :o/

I found it very noteworthy when Tracy said that people may cry, may get angry, etc. I once had a client get angry when she was describing how her IBS was ruining her life. I was doing a home visit in her own home and I felt genuinely frightened.

Most interesting, overall the placebo effect, i recently have taken the placebo course and it’s WILD the power of the mind and healing! I am really positive with my patients and use these tips Tracy mentions with lots of empathy and pauses, and it really does work on most of my patients. With the exception of one who I recently lost, due to pandemic and $$. I was sad to lose her in the mental state she is right now on her Nocebo – place of fear.
