Deep Dive on Beyond the Science: Practitioner Pitfalls and Best Practices

Hi!

Are you confident in your knowledge of going Beyond the Science, as seen through the functional medicine lens?

Although you may already be a savvy practitioner, I am certain you will learn something new in this video. You’ll walk away with pages of notes and practical pearls you can use in your practice right away.

Here are some of the things we’ll be discussing:

  • What’s the surprising, single largest choice you can make to set up your patients for more positive (or negative health) outcomes?
  • When and How is the Diagnosis doing more harm than you realize?
  • How to tap into your best (free!) resource to help create sustainable patient results.
  • The top 3 reasons they don’t actually Get Well.
  • If you don’t do ________________ consistently, your ability to help patients is likely going to be cut very short.
  • Are you missing the Forest as you focus on the Trees?
  • The #1 obstacle that gets in the way of patients’ success even for the savviest of practitioners.

Thank you very much for joining in the fun and learning!

With warmth, love, and gratitude to you for sharing your gifts with so many –

Please share your thoughts in the “Ask a Question” area below about what inspired you in this presentation… Include what type of practitioner you are, so that we can all see your unique perspective.

Absolutely loved today’s presentation, wonderful reminders as always! The single most important thing for me is to always bring the conversation back to the client and their intuition, and to allow them enough space to explore their thoughts and Express their intuition.

I am a palliative care physician hoping to integrate functional medicine further into my practice. We are fortunate in my field to often have the span of time to make powerful use of our therapeutic presence, and yet I struggle with how to craft the message of positivity for many of our patients whose conditions are life-limiting. I so appreciated your discussion of the importance of the (factually accurate) context we have an integral role in creating—especially after witnessing enduring trauma for patients who have received new diagnoses shared badly—and I have spent much time thinking about how to shape an accurate and still therapeutic message for my patients. It may be outside of this scope, but I’d welcome any thoughts! Thank you for a lovely seminar.

Another wonderful video from Tracy! “When people are really understand what it at play they are much more readily connect with the possibility of improving and their placebo effect infueles” very true!

The one pearl that stood out for me in the FB live that Tracy did today was the reminder to ask the client for their thoughts about the root cause for their disease and the SHUT UP! I have already started to retrain myself to incorporate this into my practice and it is already producing so much more valuable information from my clients than me just giving them “Patient Education.”
Thank you for the information and encouragement.

Thank you for a great presentation. What really spoke to me, was making sure I am taking enough care of myself to be able to bring energy and positivity to each and every client. Along with a positive attitude and outlook on each situation. What a great reminder!

As always a great informative message to actively listen to your clients. I’m so overwhelmed with empathy but I’m probably not properly showing it because I overwhelmed them with too much information. Thank you for the reminder to listen more and talk less this way I can become and be a better coach.

Thank you Tracy for your monthly talk today. So many things inspired me in your talk today. My self care as a health coach matters and makes a different impact on my client is amazing and true. Silence brings compassion , allow space for the truth, it creates a platform for clients to be seen and heard. Make space for empathy, sharing my emotions. Show empathy, eye contact, make space for others to be heard , listen and listen ‘ shut up and allow clients to speak and unfold the truth that will bring their healing. The negative impact of diagnosis and positive result of dynamics on clients is very true.

Thank you for this lovely and insightful discussion! I am a Functional Medicine Health Coach just beginning to see patients. The most powerful piece to me is how important the patient’s intuition is and that they may already have an internal understanding about their heslth condition. It was such a good reminder to truly learn the role of the coach, to ask good questions and to *invite* the patient to share their story and their self knowledge about what may be going on. I can tell that you are really helping practitioners strengthen their therapeutic encounter and empathy skills. I really enjoyed this thank you!

I love the articles and blogs published by SAFM and ready the weekly tips. That’s why I wanted to listen to this webinar and I really like this topic. Empathy is a very very important trait for all Healthcare practitioners so I am glad you touched upon on that topic. Its a great reminder for all of us!! I am a Certified Health Coach and is currently working with a Fertility doctor in India to develop holistic wellness plans for patients going through infertility. Thanks for doing this…

Wow, this really hit home. I am always afraid to over promise, or be too certain I can help anyone for fear that I can’t. I guess I can see both sides, but it is so true that if I don’t believe it how will they. And it is so mush more helpful for them to truly believe that they will get better. Thank you!

What you talked about in today’s live so resonate with me, and the art of listening and power of empathy I have heard it before, but this time I really get it and thank you Tracy for your generous gift of teaching, I have picked up many pearls today. Thank you!

I like the saying that the knowledge will not help patients to recover, what’s more important is to know how to empower them.

Wow, your statement on childhood trauma and it’s biochemical effects on the body raised my eyebrows. I had to look up the HPATG axis. I want to know more on how we can help our patients who have suffered abuse, childhood trauma, or suppression of their feelings. What does childhood trauma look like?

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!

Thank you Tracy for another great webinar! The pearls that resonated the most for me were the importance of forming a meaningful relationship with the patient and making sure that we are showing empathy for what they are dealing with. I also liked how you recommended that we ask patients to use their own intuition to tell us what they think are the reasons for the root cause of their problem and how much knowledge we can glean from that. The fact that we need to educate patients about the dynamics of what is happening in their body so that they can have a true understanding of what is going on and therefore help them to feel inspired and empowered to get better is very important.

This is what is wrong with hospitals. The patients who try to speak up are quickly shushed with anxiety medications. I always felt that silent stares were awkward and required a response. I now understand that it is a crucial part of healing and a time to learn about the client. Thank you, Tracy, for another eye opener!

Like most of the others who listened to this great talk, I really loved you discussing the power of allowing the client to voice their intuitive ideas on what may be at the root of their disease – and to encourage this by asking them and being quiet, looking into their eyes with a kind encouraging smile, and LISTENING. If they think they don’t know, then push them gently with “but what if you had to take a guess?” and letting them know that even if someone has previously dismissed it, or worse, laughed at it, please say it again.

Regardless of how helpful their answer to the practitioner, the empowerment to the client of a listening ear is everything. That alone will move them forward in their healing journey.

Awesome Facebook Live today!! I loved the reminder of the placebo effect and how important it is to be confident with your client. Also taking the time to listen to what they are feeling instead of just talking and taking notes. I also love the way we share with the clients needs to be on their level in simple terms. Educate, inspire, and enpower them!!

Wow Tracy! This talk has convicted me. I am guilty of talking and dominating the conversation during visits. I am guilty of rushing through visits to get to the next appointment, and I am guilty of compassion fatigue. However, I know that I can change these things. This talk has challenged me to express empathy and practice silence at every visit because it is needed.

Yes! asking the RIGHT questions, no matter if you have a dozen intake pages , it is not worth much if you don’t ask the right questions which will give us the essential clues to what is driving un wellness in someone. great insights! thank you

Thank you for this perspective! I indeed found that in practicing “traditional” medicine it was a challenge to feel like I really could be completely focused on my patient. The pressures of overwhelmed schedules, high volume expectations by administration, and the need to navigate an EMR can make it very challenging. As a health care provider it is so important to always be aware of what your patient really needs-often it is just your attention and focus, and yes, empathy. I feel truly blessed to have found SAFM and really want to be able to bring this holistic, functional, whole person approach to my patients or clients, as well as hopefully as an education and enlightenment to my medical colleagues.
Thank you!
