Detox Cleanse Myths & Truths

Hi!

I am so excited to share this Facebook Live and THESE POWERFUL PEARLS of functional medicine with you.  At SAFM we teach our students to be both confident and highly skilled at “puzzle piecing” and finding the interconnectedness between pieces of each patient’s unique case.

In this presentation, I’ll share a few staples but also some unexpected connections which might surprise you!

Check out this video to get some clinical pearls you can use right away.  You’ll learn:

Powerful Pearls about Detoxifying

  • Do you believe what “experts” say about your body detoxifying chemicals naturally and there’s nothing you can do (or have to do?) to make it work any faster or better?
  • What are common, hidden sources of toxins and chemicals
  • The role – and limitation – of “cleanses”
  • MTHFR hype and help: separating fact from fiction
  • When a focus on detox is not only misguided but dangerous
  • Why it’s so important to think and work “beyond the liver”

Thank you very much for joining in the fun and learning!

With warmth, love, and gratitude to you for sharing your gifts with so many –

I like the myths about the MTHFR and the adrenal “Fatigue”. I am someone who is interested in becoming a nutritionist, and suffer from genetic hemochromotosis, hypothyroid, and mitral valve prolapse, so I’d like to be able to gain the knowledge to help others such as myself.

First, bravo on the note about detox being dangerous for those not “in a place of strength” to begin with. Local MLM reps claiming to be coaches continue to do folks in my community more than a disservice in this space due to their lack of knowledge.

Second, while currently a Core 101 student I’m a little embarrassed to say that I did NOT know that the kidneys and eyes were the first organs hit by high circulating blood sugar.

What I found most surprising and fascinating was that lead is stored in the bones and is released with loss of bone mass, wreaking havoc for aging women.

Vegus nerve stimulation and parasympathetic NS stimulation is good for detox. Makes perfect sense, but I didn’t know!

I never considered how these cleanses are actually re-introducing toxins to the body. Low and slow. I get it.

Lovely to ‘meet you’. I’m a colleague of Marion Watlingtons in Bermuda.

There were so many great pearls of wisdom, but I think my favorite is don’t put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t feel safe to eat. Wow!

This was packed with great information and I love your enthusiasm! I like the pearl, “don’t put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t put in your body”. Good one!

This information about analyzing labs and doing the detective work is EXACTLY what I need to add to my current coaching skills. Thank you so much for sharing these. I love your teaching style and is helpful for me to see it when making a decision between 2 schools.

I loved learning the importance of nutrient sufficiency for effective detoxification. Also the importance of all of the channels being open so that what is liberated can actually make it out!

Don’t put anything on your skin that you are not willing to put in your mouth – great quote to use and so true.

So helpful to understand that detoxing too soon is NOT good for us. The Lymphatic system is as important as the liver etc. This was a very helpful talk.
Thanks Tracy

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for addressing genetics. I feel like so many patients (AND practitioners) focus on genetic risk instead of being primarily concerned with what is going on in their body currently. How do you help patients understand that despite the lab results, there’s a bigger puzzle piece that needs to be addressed and corrected before everything else can fall into place?

We have to love and care for our livers..they are responsible for processing everything that comes through our bodies :). Kidneys are equally important and vulnerable to toxicity…BUT our bodies are strong and designed to handle a lot! They are not dumb buckets 🙂

My favorite pearl was definitely the concept of the skin being a very large mouth. Life changing. Thanks once again!! Best, paz

Wow, hadn’t thought about the impact of tight clothes!! That was definitely a new piece of info. Thank you!

Did not know about constipation and detoxing. Have experienced this myself when cleansing. Interesting. Thank you!

Love that you brought up the dirty dozen and clean 15. I also like how you discuss the genetic variants and how to interpret/make clinical decisions about them. I always learn a lot from these mini sessions!

While I knew about the lymphatic systems role in detox, I wasn’t in the habit of including it when working with clients, mostly focusing on the other systems – the gut, the liver, nutrition and removing toxins from daily life. I was happy to be reminded of the lymphatic system and all of the ways to assist it and will make sure to cover this when working with my clients! Thanks!

I loved how you re-emphasized that you first need to make sure that the body needs to be able to get rid of the toxins before detoxing. Simple but crucial.

I thoroughly enjoyed your overview and found the content to be very engaging. I especially found the bio chemistry portion involving background targeted detox and the proper process for detoxing which is required to get desirable results. I like the motto, “learn by doing”.
