Detox Cleanse Myths & Truths

Hi!

I am so excited to share this Facebook Live and THESE POWERFUL PEARLS of functional medicine with you.  At SAFM we teach our students to be both confident and highly skilled at “puzzle piecing” and finding the interconnectedness between pieces of each patient’s unique case.

In this presentation, I’ll share a few staples but also some unexpected connections which might surprise you!

Check out this video to get some clinical pearls you can use right away.  You’ll learn:

Powerful Pearls about Detoxifying

  • Do you believe what “experts” say about your body detoxifying chemicals naturally and there’s nothing you can do (or have to do?) to make it work any faster or better?
  • What are common, hidden sources of toxins and chemicals
  • The role – and limitation – of “cleanses”
  • MTHFR hype and help: separating fact from fiction
  • When a focus on detox is not only misguided but dangerous
  • Why it’s so important to think and work “beyond the liver”

Thank you very much for joining in the fun and learning!

With warmth, love, and gratitude to you for sharing your gifts with so many –

The one pearl that is fundamental to share with patients is: “Do not put anything on your skin that you are not going to eat”. There is plenty of information on nutrition and environmental factors but patients overlook products they use on their skin.
This is fascinating!
Thank you!

Loved everything. I liked the reminder of opening the windows to get fresh air, getting out the toxins in our homes. Thanks again!

So many pearls from today’s FB live! One that I hadn’t heard of/thought about before was, “If you give too much folate to people who are hypermethylators they can start to suffer in a big way. Just because someone has a SNP doesn’t mean the SNP is currently active in their body and causing any problems.”

And another thing I thought was helpful to hear again and again is as health coaches & practitioners to be careful about preaching or talking too much about about our diet or lifestyle to clients or potential clients because you run the risk of overwhelming them and scaring them off from working with you because they feel that it is too hard or they will have to sacrifice too much.

I had settled in for a delicious, pearl filled FB-live with Tracy….and for some reason my feed stalled, stopped, and struggled to keep up. I missed so much, but thank God for the opportunity to hear it all on replay. (I’m running a Spring Cleanse – I need these pearls, reminders, check-points!!)
I’m traveling now and can’t get back to watch it before midnight, but am hoping that this post will count as an entry to win a semester. I am so grateful to have found Tracy, the solid information she teaches and her unique ability to present it in such a digestible way!

Fingers, toes and eyes crossed…

I appreciate the reminders to prepare and be “ready” to detoxify. Establish good elimination FIRST. Also a good reminder to be mindful of what you put ON you, not just IN you.

I really enjoyed this webinar, thank you! What I found most fascinating was when you asked about the condition for those people who don’t sweat and get overloaded with heat. I had this for years and no doctor, nurse, gynecologist, holistic practitioner, endocrinologist, cardiologist (I could go on and on with my list of who I asked about this horrible feeling) but yet was told a number of ridiculous reasons from not working out hard enough to electrolyte imbalance. So to hear it was due to hypothyroid function and/or hypoadrenal function was literally jaw dropping for me! Wow!! It definitely ties in with my Hashimoto’s. Thank you for giving me the answer I’ve been looking for – for so many years!

The one thing I always appreciate about each and every presentation is that I am indeed a beginner. Even after 40+ years in healthcare, a couple years doing bench science…when I listen to you, I’m a student. Thank you for that. Today my biggest takeaway was timing. So many times clients just want to push forward with a detox…as tho it is some sort of right of passage or something. Your words will be giving my words more creedance in the future. Thank you for allowing us to sit at your knee and be students.

a great reminder that not everyone is ready to jump into a cleanse like i do, Being very cautious with clients, and making sure to ease them into it, avoiding extreme reactions. I will watch this again and again, thank you, Tracy

I think I finally understand HOW sugar makes us fat. The liver goes frantic with excessive sugar; can’t allow any more into the bloodstream; and the only way to manage the excess is to package it up as FAT…..and send it on its merry way to bellies, inner thighs, and other favorite destination sites. Do I understand?!? Also, important to realize the toxicity of cleanses in terms of “die-off” and the crucial need to flush the system with adequate water consumption. As always, I love and appreciate Tracy’s direct and authentic language and her ability to take the complex and serve it up in healthy, nourishing, sensible “portions”!!! THANK YOU:) xxoo

Thank you again for this webinar – the “pearl” that most struck me was that I didn’t know you had to make sure the other organs such as liver, kidney, skin had to be functioning well for detox or that you had to make sure your constipation was handled first – I was always under the impression that the detox would help move those things along.

I learned about the bones storing lead them during menopause it’s released causing anxiety and other conditions of detox pathways are not supported. Thank you for a very informative webinar !

Sooo much wonderful information. The pearls that I got was “balance” and “simple”! You started off talking about the 2 ends of the spectrum beliefs about toxins and detox but the truth is there is fact and myth in both views. Simple: someone may have a headache because they need to detox, but start simple. They may just be dehydrated!

Great reminder on how permeable our skin is – don’t put anything on there that you wouldn’t eat! Appreciate all the aspects covered in this, as toxins come from so many different places and our body has so many different pathways to process. I hope to go more in depth through your school someday soon!!

Thank you Tracy! What inspired me was towards the end when you talked about the timing of detoxification and that
You want to detox when the body is stable and strong. So many great pearls!

I loved hearing about lymph movement and how important that is for detox. I stress hydration all the time, but forgot about electrolytes. Great talk and will glisten over and over!

I am a psychiatric nurse practitioner and previously would just prescribe medicine for my patients’ symptoms; until I started working on myself with clean eating and life style changes. I believe after listening to your webinar, I detoxed too fast. I really started feeling better after I recovered, so then started working on my patients life style changes and have hit a lot of resistance with them. I like how you said to “not do it too fast” and do something sustainable for them. I also feel that the part about chemical toxins that are absorbed and how they affect especially women or girls with increased body fat and the estrogen overload that can cause adverse symptoms that cause a viscous cycle made a lot of sense. I am crazy interested in functional medicine and want to keep learning. Thank you for sharing.

I love listening to you and discovering new wisdom. I never thought about the body releasing toxins as a person loses weight. I love the saying that we must teach people how to detox responsibly and that we should detox from a position of strength.

Great pearl about environmental toxins: it’s all about choices, and educating our clients so that they can make informed and sustainable choices when it comes to ways to mitigate their exposures. We can’t expect them to adhere to our habits–they need to make those choices for themselves.

Hi Tracy,

I just love your webinars! One question I have re detoxing is for children – I know a child who has sensory processing disorder and started showing signs of not absorbing fatty acids (“chicken skin” on his face) and when tested it was showing he isn’t detoxing well, but as a result of his sensory aversions his diet is super limited. How do you go about helping children like this when they’re too anxious/fearful to try new foods – especially those that help mitochondrial function and detox function.

Thanks!
Jen
