Myths & Missteps Hormones Balancing

Hi!

I am so excited to share this Facebook Live and THESE POWERFUL PEARLS of functional medicine with you.  At SAFM we teach our students to be both confident and highly skilled at “puzzle piecing” and finding the interconnectedness between pieces of each patient’s unique case.

In this presentation, I’ll share a few staples but also some unexpected connections which might surprise you!

Hormones are powerful, complex messenger molecules in the body. They are sending chemical signals 24/7, to assure activities throughout the body are coordinated in response to our environment. This is the beautiful *dance* of the hormones that includes metabolic, stress, and sex hormones.  Of course, there are many things which can challenge and interfere with that coordination, leading to imbalance and dysfunction (from hot flashes to IBS to anxiety). Our dancing hormones can start “stepping on each other’s toes”.

Although you may already be a savvy practitioner, I believe you will learn something new, that you can use right away in your practice.  Here are some of the things we’ll be discussing:

  • The biggest error that even savvy practitioners make in supporting “adrenal fatigue“.
  • Why the type of hormone testing you use matters. A lot! You’ll be surprised why.
  • The missing link in helping your patients fully overcome PCOS dynamics.
  • A hugely false assumption about menopause and estrogen levels. This is a BIG one.
  • The hormonal triple-threat and how it causes Infertility.
  • Why women’s fears of estrogen are often misplaced – and what to do to support them.
  • The highest-impact supplements I recommend for common hormone imbalances.

Thank you very much for joining in the fun and learning!

With warmth, love, and gratitude to you for sharing your gifts with so many –

I loved learning about the different types of testing for hormone levels and most
specifically the DUTCH testing! Tracy, I appreciate your explanation of complex,
clinical topics! You have a gift to be able to explain these topics so well! I
always love listening to you and learning from you!

    Miranda Adani says:

One of the important takeaways from Tracy‘s talk was the fact that the microbiome controls hormones and that all the other systems can be processing estrogen well and then when it hits the microbiome it gets recirculated into the body and not eliminated from the body. I think this might be happening to me as I had to go off my bio-identical estrogen that I’ve been on for five years since a hysterectomy because it was causing period like pain in my abdomen and when I went off it, the pain stopped.
I feel that I have excess estrogen in my system and maybe the reason is it’s not clearing as my digestion is not very good. Going off the estrogen seems to have increased my blood pressure so this is a serious issue of getting a balanced amount of estrogen in my system. I used to take calcium D glucarate as Tracy mentioned and now I think I will go back on it.

I am greatly interested in functional medicine and how it is used to augment western medicine. There is tons of information for me to learn in conventional medicine as well as functional.
Hormones have always been a hard topic for me conquer. I am currently learning about the thyroid and the different types of testing needed. Your topic on what hormone testing is needed was greatly appreciated.
Where did you get your start in functional medicine and do you have any recommended readings?
    Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Loved learning about how high insulin – not primarily from just diet but also from STRESS can cause hormonal imbalance eg high testosterone and low progesterone causing infertility.
Also think it’s great to go low and slow with supplements to find what works individually

    Mary says:

I love how you emphasized going beyond food for healing, as many of us lose site of the huge role stress- in all its forms- plays on our patients symptoms and recovery: The Pearl: ” This is why the foundation work we do by helping people hold up a mirror and see more clearly an honest reflection of their stress levels and how they manage it is so super important for the vast majority of states of dis-ease- the same concept applies to sleep hygiene and people over stimulating the sympathetic nervous system before bed. I find that many people who get stuck in their healing need more support around calming this system so they can be in rest and digest- flowing more easily into a state of recovery and healing. I love how you teach and can’t get enough of this stuff!!!! Thank you!

    Alissabeth says:

Always amazing information Tracy. It is so sad that mainstream healthcare only looks at the pieces of hormones and don’t put them together as collaborating factors in various illness and disease. I will be rewatching and taking down more notes!

    Tara Graham says:

So many pearls! I found the breakdown of estrogen and the importance of clearing to be the most pertinent for my current client base. It was helpful to have simple language to explain what could be a very confusing topic. I appreciate the delivery of the information as it will help me, in turn, inform my clients. Thank you.

The pearl for me tonight as simple as it seems was the sleep hygiene piece. I never heard it referred to in such a way before. I love it, and so relevant! Thank you.

I have heard that you are in a group of professionals building an idea to change well care through special clinics…is there the work being done to design a program for K-12 wellness training in mainstream school systems?…thank you so much for sharing your talent/passion/care…Linda

    Michele Rhodes says:

Interesting connection between gut dysbiosis and hormones. “disease begins in the gut”..yes! When you look at how much of a “harmony” all of the hormones need, the balance, it really makes you realize the body is an amazing thing…and we do too many non-natural things to it these days to allow it to function correctly. Very interesting lecture. Thank you!

    Lexi Seifer says:

I am new to functional medicine and i just love all the information about supplements and what they can do for our bodies. Also very interesting that hormones are linked to so many different things and play in a variety of roles throughout the human body
    and not just reproduction.

    Micah Hubbard says:

I am going to have to rewatch this to soak in all of the information. Functional medicine is a dream come true for me. I have a lot to learn, thank you for sharing all of your knowledge with us!

    Ann Curtis says:

As I am currently dealing with health issues–again–I am blown away with how little allopathic medicine actually really knows about hormones (full panels? They never order full panels on anything). I am equally disappointed that NDs don’t do the simplest of testing to rule out major hormone imbalances. I only had panels run because I specifically asked to have a female hormone menopause panel run.

As I am currently “newly” postmenopausal at 50, I received a massive education just from what little was talked about (and Tracy actually covered A LOT!). I have been, by my estimate, estrogen dominant my entire life. Female hormone panels showed almost nonexistent progesterone and free testosterone; estradiol estrogen mildly high. There is more than one thing currently going on, but I believe it is my female hormones that set everything off.

THANK YOU for this wonderful live video. I know all these various hormones are interconnected. Really looking forward to the 101 CORE Semester this fall and really diving into everything!
