NSAIDS: The Hidden Root Cause?

Advil, Motrin, Naprosyn, Aleve, Aspirin….

Make sure you do a thorough medication history with your new clients and patients.  It’s amazing how an extended course of NSAID over-the-counter painkillers can be a key root cause of downstream disease, dysfunction, and imbalance in the body.  And most people don’t even think to mention it to you, given their belief that the drugs is safe and benign for ongoing or high-dose usage.

This is a more aggressive example of what can happen with NSAID intake (even 6 days!), but the warning it implies bears heeding.   This is a similar clinical case study you will find interesting.   And you may learn more about exactly how and why NSAIDs can cause such dramatic gastrointestinal damage here.

I have written before about alternatives to NSAIDs – options with positive side effects!  If you want to know more about intestinal permeability, check out this quick tip for its connection to autoimmune disease or a more detailed overview here.

Specifically for healing the protective mucosal lining in the intestines during/after NSAID use, I often recommend short-term supplementation with a multi-herbal mucilaginous blend (e.g. aloe vera, DGL, marshmallow, slippery elm) such as Designs for Health’s G.I. Revive.

I hope this serves you and your passion for serving others.
