Thank you Tracy, as always, for this pearl-packed session! One thing that really stood out for me as a health coach is the idea that the body will continue to bring on more adipose tissue if it thinks you are in a mode of survival or unsafe, and will FIGHT you on losing that extra body fat until it feels that it actually is safe (and you can’t trick the body!). Your thoughts, your stress levels, your daily actions and self-talk — all this matters in how your body perceives the state of your environment and whether or not your survival is assured. I also found it interesting that Tracy said “the most effective way to gain weight is to go on a diet”! This makes so much sense given yo-yo dieting and how much stress this puts on the body.
I found the information about fasting insulin and thyroid extremely important.
I really found the comments about xenoestrogens and detoxification interesting. I really thought that the comment about extended days of fasting is dangerous because it of the toxin overload is too much. I have never heard that before. I like the concept of being flexible and approachable with patients.
What sort of feeding window is good for people with Hashimoto’s PCOS, and anemia.
You can lie to everyone else, but you can’t lie to the nervous system. It knows when your stressed and it hears all your self doubts and thoughts. It’s holding on to that weight to protect you. You need to convince it that nothing you’re stressed about is a real threat. And while you’re at it, let go of those thoughts because they’re not real anyway! I’m an acupuncturist.
You will find lower fasting glucose levels when beginning to have signs of insulin resistance. Seems like it would be the opposite BUT makes perfect sense when you explained its caused by high fasting insulin levels.
Do you recommend a specific type of diet for DM2 patients?
Another great, informative webinar! I am a pharmacist turned health coach, and I am so inspired by the possibility of reversing metabolic disease instead of treating with band aid medications. I saw so many patients who felt “fine” but couldn’t get to feeling GREAT. I believe we all deserve to feel our best and thrive. A pearl I took away from this webinar is to check fasting insulin levels. It makes so much sense that insulin will be elevated for years before blood glucose is impacted, but it is not routine to check fasting insulin. I will definitely incorporate this into my practice!
Entering for free class drawing….was reminded today of the importance of assessing & understanding thyroid hormone conversion status by using more that TSH as a guidepost. Loved the lecture!
Yes
I really enjoyed today’s webinar. I have been struggling to help my patients with weight loss, mostly because they all want a magic pill that will make it happen. Learning about weight through the functional medicine lens is giving me the information and confidence I need to help patients address the root cause of their obesity, not just the symptom of being overweight. Thank you so much for sharing these insights today!
I think the biggest pearl is to get clients to understand they are not going on a diet but needing to make a dietary change for life. Teaching your client how to get off processed foods and choosing whole foods. Once they learn to cook food and their taste change it opens up a whole new world of food getting off of processed foods!!
Thank you so much for all your great information?
I’m a nurse practitioner student. About to start clinicals. I am 50 and definitely struggling my whole life with weight loss. It makes sense to me when you explained weight gain is a response. So finding what helps my body feel secure enough to let go of the weight/ surplus.
I learned more about how TSH doesn’t capture the full picture of how well your body is utilizing thyroid hormones.
Pearl.. for sure the importance of zinc, iron and magnesium for correct T4 to T3 conversion!
Currently enrolled in 101. Found it fascinating that Tracy said that once inflammation root causes are addressed, that weight loss ensues on its own. Have also experienced that first hand.
Thanks for a great webinar. I’ll keep trying to swim!
Interesting pearl regarding gut overgrowth and leaky gut
Causing thyroid and sex hormone imbalances
I have worked in Women’s Health my whole life so issues involving weight and hormones fascinate me and I am very I interested to go beyond my traditional teaching. I loved the pearl of going beyond the “basic” thyroid labs that we have all been taught
Could not agree more about stress being a huge issue with weight loss. It is number topic I discuss with my patients in regards to weight loss.
Entering the contest to win the course
I love the insight into how the body adds weight as a way to self-preserve! This is good patient education.
