SAFM Program Evolution

Chronic disease is one of the defining health challenges of our time, and functional medicine is increasingly becoming an essential approach to addressing it. SAFM’s role in this moment is clear: to train practitioners who are equipped to practice functional medicine with rigor, depth, and integrity.

As the field continues to grow, so must the way we support the practitioners moving through SAFM’s programs.

Over the coming year, we will be implementing several updates that unify the program, strengthen the learning experience, provide a clear pathway to progression, and ensure practitioners have meaningful support throughout their journey (from early training through long-term support for your success).

These updates reflect our continued commitment to helping practitioners develop the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills required to deliver thoughtful functional medicine care.

THE SIMPLIFIED STRUCTURE

SAFM has always been designed as more than a course of study. It is a learning ecosystem intended to support practitioners as they build both clinical understanding and real-world practice capability.

As the program has grown, we have continued expanding the ways students are supported through their learning journey. In June 2024, SAFM introduced a new program structure designed to unify the learning experience for new students. The next phase of this transition now extends that same model across the entire school through Full Access for the complete practitioner journey.

Full Access provides progressive access to SAFM’s programs, resources, and support across every stage of your journey as a practitioner:

    • Core clinical curriculum and continued professional development with structured progression through Levels 1, 2, and 3
    • Ongoing clinical discussion and case learning.
    • Practice activation programs, mentorship, and resources designed to help translate functional medicine learning in real-world clinical practice
    • 3 tiers of support (Clinical, Practice, and Program Experience) available both live and asynchronously throughout your journey
    • Collaborative practitioner community, fostering peer learning, discussion, and professional connection
    • Expansive practitioner tools, references, and resources to support ongoing clinical and practice growth
  • Ongoing professional development opportunities, including credits towards recertification

This structure allows SAFM to fully support practitioners who want to remain engaged in learning, collaboration, and professional growth within the SAFM community.

WHAT’S GROWING IN FULL ACCESS

These updates are more than structural changes. The next year and beyond is an exciting period of growth for SAFM. We will be expanding in powerful ways through new programs, tools, mentorship opportunities, and practitioner resources designed to support deeper clinical growth, stronger real-world implementation, and long-term professional development. We’re incredibly excited about what this will make possible for our students and the practitioners they are becoming.

  • Level 3 Clinical Mastery Program – In a field that’s evolving as rapidly as functional medicine, staying sharp as a practitioner means staying in the learning. Our new Level 3 – Clinical Mastery program is designed to grow with you. This more defined Level 3 experience focuses on ongoing clinical growth, advanced case exploration, evolving functional medicine topics, and continued practitioner development. Combined with expanded clinical activation and practice support, this supports practitioners as they continue strengthening their clinical thinking, sharpen their skills, and deepen their confidence in real-world practice long after certification.
  • Expanded Clinical Q&A – Clinical Q&A is expanding to all Full Access students at Level 2 and beyond, creating more opportunities for continued clinical support as practitioners move into increasingly complex cases and deeper levels of practice. These sessions provide a dedicated space to work through real clinical questions, strengthen clinical reasoning, and receive experienced guidance within an ongoing collaborative learning environment.
  • Practice and Activation Support Throughout the SAFM Journey – practitioners develop deeper understanding and stronger clinical confidence when they begin putting concepts into practice in real-world contexts as they learn them. Activator is evolving through integration with Ignite to create a more seamless and comprehensive practice support experience. This expanded Activator program will now begin earlier into the Level 1 journey and provide ongoing activation support alongside the curriculum throughout the student experience. Through practice guidance, mentorship, and implementation-focused resources, students receive the support needed to not just learn functional medicine, but to truly begin doing this work. That practical integration is one of the defining elements that makes the SAFM experience unique.
  • Practice Q&A across all three levels – Every student regardless of where they are in the program will have access to ongoing, practical clinical support. This is hands-on guidance for the real-world “how do I actually do this” questions that come with implementing the learning and building a practice.
  • Jump Start Expansion – Jump Starts are structured group support calls designed to help students navigate the SAFM journey with greater clarity, organization, and momentum. Moving forward, students will have access to two monthly Jump Start experiences: Activator Jump Starts focused on practice implementation and activation support, and Clinical Curriculum Jump Starts focused on program navigation, certification progression, and logistical guidance throughout the learning journey. Together, they give you a place to get oriented at the start of a new level, ask the questions that come up along the way, organize your path forward, or recalibrate when life pulls you off track. Think of them as your reset button wherever you are in the journey, Jump Starts help you find your footing and move forward with a clear plan.
  • A growing team of educators – SAFM is continuing to expand its multi-educator model, bringing a broader range of clinical expertise, perspectives, and real-world experience into the learning environment. Students will have increasing opportunities to learn from practitioners with diverse backgrounds, specialties, approaches, and areas of focus within functional medicine. This creates a richer and more dynamic educational experience through exposure to different ways of thinking, clinical problem-solving, and practice application – helping deepen understanding and strengthen practitioner development throughout the SAFM journey.
  • AI-Powered Learning Tools – SAFM is developing intelligent tools built specifically around the SAFM environment and knowledge-base to change the way you search, explore, and engage with what you’re learning. searchSAFM, currently in testing, is a contextual search tool to help students quickly and intuitively find what they need, and understand how the functional medicine knowledge connects. Instead of digging to find what you need, the right information finds you. askSAFM, coming soon, takes that further by letting you interact with SAFM’s full body of knowledge as a conversation. Ask a question, explore a concept, and get answers drawn from the depth of everything SAFM has built. These tools are designed to support how you learn during the program and how you practice long after.
  • Platinum Program – Platinum is an intentional, deeply supportive experience for practitioners seeking the highest level of support at SAFM. Built around mentorship, leadership development, advanced clinical and case support, and meaningful contribution to the future of functional medicine, the program provides intimate access to growth opportunities, collaboration, and a rich community of peers who share this mission. This is where practitioners who are driven to deepen their impact, grow as leaders in the field, and advance the standard of functional medicine care, come together. Enrollment opens once annually in June for an August start. Students with AFMC Level 2 Pass status or beyond are eligible to apply. More details will be shared soon.

PROGRAM OPTION TRANSITIONS

As SAFM continues transitioning toward a unified Full Access practitioner experience, several legacy program options will be phased out as part of this evolution.

Beginning June 1, 2026, the following program options will close to new enrollment and will be fully retired on October 31, 2026:

  • Basic Access
  • Full Access (Level 1 Only)*
  • Full Access (Level 1 & Level 2 Only)*

Students currently enrolled in one of these options can move up to Full Access at any time, or maintain access to these options through October 31, 2026. After that time, SAFM will fully transition to the Full Access program structure moving forward.

* Note: these only apply to certain legacy enrolment cohorts and does not apply to enrollment dates March 2023 forward.

IF YOU NEED TO STEP AWAY

The transition to a unified Full Access structure is designed to create a clearer, more supportive practitioner journey with the flexibility to support real life along the way. If extenuating circumstances arise during your enrollment year, the On Hold option allows you to pause both access and payments for up to three months, giving you space to navigate what matters most without losing your place within the program.

Beyond the minimum commitment period for new enrollments, students also have the flexibility to step away and return when the timing feels right. SAFM is designed to be a robust, supportive home for practitioners who want to stay deeply engaged in their growth, clinical development, and community connection over the long term, while also recognizing that every practitioner’s journey and season of life may look different. Whether you remain actively engaged or need time away for a period, you will always be welcome here.

FULL ACCESS TUITION UPDATES

Beginning June 1, 2026, updated tuition rates will take effect for new Full Access enrollments as SAFM continues evolving toward a unified practitioner journey centered around comprehensive support, long-term development, and ongoing clinical growth.

Non-Certified Tuition

  • $350/month
  • Or as low as $300/month with annual enrollment ($3,600/year, a $600 savings)

Certified Tuition

FOR AFMC CERTIFIED PRACTITIONERS

We recognize that many certified practitioners joined SAFM under earlier program structures and access models. As SAFM continues transitioning toward a unified Full Access experience, we are offering a temporary transition opportunity for certified practitioners who wish to remain engaged with the school and practitioner community.

Certified practitioners may join Full Access for $99/month if enrolled by October 31, 2026. This rate will remain in place through April 2027, after which the current certified tuition rate of $197/month will apply.

This transition period is intended to support continued connection to SAFM’s evolving practitioner experience, including ongoing clinical discussions, practitioner resources, live learning opportunities, and the broader professional community.

LOOKING AHEAD

These changes are ultimately about creating a clearer, more cohesive practitioner journey through SAFM, one designed to better support long-term clinical growth, meaningful engagement, and the evolving needs of modern practitioners.

As SAFM continues to grow, our commitment remains the same: rigorous education, real-world application, ongoing case-based learning, meaningful community, and support for practitioners who are driven to create better outcomes through functional medicine. The structure may evolve, but the mission does not.

We also recognize that every practitioner’s path looks different. Some students will remain deeply engaged for years. Others may step away for a season and return later when the timing is right. Both are valid. SAFM has always been built to support practitioners across the full arc of their professional journey, and that will continue moving forward.

Whether you are actively participating today, pursuing certification, building a practice, or planning to reconnect in the future, we are grateful to be part of your path and honored by the trust you place in SAFM.

If you have questions or would like additional clarity around these changes or your program path, please reach out to the Student Support team. We’re here to help and support you however we can.
