Congratulations to Layne, an AFMC-certified practitioner who began her career as a nurse practitioner in hospital medicine, trained to diagnose, prescribe, and manage illness.
Faced with her own health crisis, however, that didn’t respond to conventional care, Layne found herself searching for more. She didn’t want another prescription. She wanted to know why she was feeling the way she did. That passionate search led her to functional medicine. And once she saw through that lens, Layne knew there was no turning back.
Today, Layne’s practice focuses on young women in their 20s and 30s, those whose symptoms are dismissed, minimized, or just medicated. These women are tired of hearing, “Your labs look normal.” They’ve been told to “calm down,” “eat less,” or “exercise more.” But they’re still dealing with brain fog, fatigue, bloating, mood swings, and painful periods that are disrupting their lives, all without a diagnosis and without a viable plan.
Does this sound familiar? For many practitioners, it’s a story we hear all too often.
Watch as Tracy Harrison interviews Layne to explore her approach with a special client who said, “I didn’t realize how bad my normal was until I finally started to feel good.” This 27-year-old woman came to Layne after years of struggling with bloating, fatigue, anxiety, and unexplained weight gain. She had become fearful of food, despite being a self-proclaimed foodie, and had started to feel out of control in her own body.
Conventional labs showed nothing of note. But Layne knew to dig deeper. With the help of functional labs and keen case questioning, Layne identified several culprits in this woman’s case, including a common bacterial pathogen, systemic inflammation, and key nutrient deficiencies.
Layne started with a rapid relief protocol to reduce inflammation and help the client feel better quickly. With that galvanized commitment, they tackled gut health in a big way – as a team. All while repleting nutrients and shifting key lifestyle habits to sustainable, new norms.
Layne’s client committed fully, transforming not just her symptoms but her entire relationship with her health. By the end of their time together, this young woman was eating a wide variety of foods without discomfort. Her periods normalized after years on birth control. Anxiety decreased. Sleep improved. The client shared, “I feel so empowered. My body is finally working with me instead of against me.”
Layne credits her ability to create these kinds of outcomes to her education at the School of Applied Functional Medicine (SAFM). She shares: “There are no cookie-cutter protocols in my practice. SAFM gave me not only the knowledge, but the tools and community to make personalized care possible.”
Today, Layne continues to empower women to reclaim their health, bringing functional medicine insight, deep listening, and compassionate coaching to every case. Her journey is a testament to what happens when a practitioner steps outside the box and commits to helping people heal from the inside out.
P.S. If you are passionate about transforming healthcare through the power of functional medicine, we encourage you to learn more about SAFM’s practitioner training programs. Enrollment for our next cohort is now open!
