Hypothyroidism and Bones

 
Practitioners usually know that hyperthyroidism can negatively affect bone density – increasing the risk for both osteopenia and osteoporosis. However, few understand that hypothyroidism can also play a powerful role in these dysfunctions. And often does! 

Think about it. Hypothyroidism is rampant. Especially when subclinical. With the inadequate ways mainstream medicine assesses thyroid function (TSH only, sometimes accompanied by T4), most people with intracellular hypothyroid function end up unacknowledged, untreated, and miserable.  

While we all know the hypothyroid hallmarks of cold extremities, weight gain, hair loss, and constipation, few practitioners think of hypothyroidism when faced with a client’s worsening bone health.
