Diuretics and Hypertension

Is your client’s diuretic drug for hypertension actually keeping their blood pressure up?  Woohoo! Another client completely off of hypertension medications. Unbelievable to me how many times we have seen that a diuretic medication itself is actually a big part of the problem in sustaining the hypertension!  Because it causes electrolyte depletion. Especially a concern with insufficient potassium and magnesium for keeping healthy blood pressure. Fantastic reinforcement that the body is an osmotic system!   It’s not so much sodium on its own but rather sodium: potassium balance (and having much more potassium) that matters in keeping healthy blood pressure.  And as a master electrolyte, magnesium plays a major role in allowing cellular uptake of potassium into the cells.  Higher intake of veggies and fruits really helps to boost potassium.  But alas, at times, it is primarily the drug that is then draining it from our clients.

I hope this quick clinical tip serves you and your patients and clients.

Warmly,
