Yeast and Ketones

Yeast can live off of ketones too!  In recommending a lower-carbohydrate diet (along with antifungals, etc.) for your clients with yeast/fungal overgrowth, be careful not to recommend a diet that is *too* low-carb. Yeast have mitochondria which means (just like us) they can use ketones for food. So I do recommend getting rid of all grain flours and overt sweeteners and alcohol. But be sure to keep in some starchy veggies (e.g. butternut squash), some fruit, and perhaps a serving here and there of quinoa or brown rice. As with most things in the body, Balance is key to re-establishing microbial balance in the gut.

    would alternative flours such as coconut, tigernut, cassava be grouped into “grains”. Would these be OK for a client with candida overgrowth, similar to the starchy vegetables, if used in moderation.

      No, coconut, tigernut or cassava are not grains. They do have a varying amounts of carbohydrates and starches but many people find them to be a safe alternative to grain-based flours and some tolerate them very well while working on bringing down the candida overgrowth and healing the gut mucosal lining. At SAFM we stress the importance of individual approach to each client, thus, consider the possibility of food sensitivities to any of these foods as a reason to avoid them.
