True Health or Not True Health

I am so excited to share this Facebook Live with you. All current practitioners – both newcomers and veterans to functional medicine science – are welcome. I bring you fresh knowledge and insight into the functional medicine interconnectedness at play with some fascinating case examples of the (often huge) difference between treating disease and reversing root causes.

At SAFM we teach our students to be both confident and highly skilled at “puzzle piecing” and finding the interconnectedness between the pieces of each patient’s unique case. This approach makes all the difference in the world in your business. Because here’s a truth you need to hear: Absence of symptoms and true health are NOT the same thing. We’ve got to be willing to dive into the detailed and unique interconnectedness for each person.

Although you may already be a savvy practitioner, I believe you will learn something new, that you can use right away in your practice.  Here are some of the things I discuss in this video:
  • The fundamental flaw that prevents conventional medicine from being effective in reversing chronic disease
  • The common mistake many practitioners make in looking for Root Causes of dis-ease (are you doing it too?)
  • Unexpected connections in hypertension: the common remedy worsens the very thing it’s supposed to be helping (this one will definitely surprise you)
  • Common conventional rapid relief intervention can even be life-threatening
  • A classic heart disease intervention actually increasing the risk of a tragic cardiovascular event
  • The most important true root causes of dis-ease that are missed – every single day! – by even savvy practitioners

Thank you very much for joining in on the fun and learning!

With warmth, love, and gratitude to you for sharing your gifts with so many,

The pearls on insomnia I found most fascinating! Am I the only person who didn’t know melatonin was a hormone? I guess I never thought to learn more about it even though I have taken it as a supplement. Thank you for another wisdom packed experience, Tracy!!

    Sarah Belcher says:

I love Tracy’s style in teaching. She makes complex subjects understandable and this is the mark of an amazing practitioner. I always teach my patients about the pain medication they are on and their influences on the gut and HPA axis. I look forward to her videos and am looking forward to all her future ones.!
    Thank you.

    NICOLE HUME says:

Tracy, I love your enthusiasm and knowledge. I never heard of Functional Medicine until I attended Institute of Integrative Nutrition. After listening to that particular lecture I became very intrigued. Functional Medicine really makes sense. I work for a surgeon who is very conventional. I realize there is a time and place for both medicines. However, I believe Functional Medicine is the true key to helping people heal.
Thank you for these live video and for all that you do.

    Mary Bersagel says:

Tracy–where do you get your energy from? Can I get some of that by taking your class? Your enthusiasm is infectious. I love that you debunk the myths that these common medications such as NSAID’s are without risk.
They cause many side effects in the kidneys and liver. As an RN, I know that I want to learn and then teach functional medicine/nutrition. Thanks you. Mary

It was a pleasure listening in to another “Facebook Live”! Thank you for doing these each month. I always learn something new. Today, I was surprised to learn about the connection between Beta Blockers and insomnia and how long term use of these medications can cause downstream effects such as not making optimal amounts of melatonin. Indeed, we need this hormone for our body to go into healing mode that allow our arteries to heal overnight. You gave great recommendations for supplements that may assist the reduction of BP such as calming herbs from green tea to holy basil to allow a weaning off of these medications while also taking short-term melatonin. Thanks for the great insight you provide in each of these sessions! I hope to be a student of yours one semester very soon!

    Linda Osmond says:

Tracy, your enthusiasm, knowledge, and TRUTH resonates with me so strongly every time I hear you speak. Thank you for being YOU! I recognize the truth in your conversation about trying to “fix one problem” but creating another. I’m not a fan of medications or even NSAIDs, but I think that I could evaluate even supplements and their effects on the body system as a whole to get even further into root cause health coaching. I also LOVE how you described the differences, yet complimentary value, of convention and functional medicine. I think we need to honor both methodologies and realize the place of use for both. Different tools for different jobs. I really like that!

I have had various training through different of organizations, but I would LOVE the chance to win the free semester to learn how to do and explain and uncover root issues the way that you do…with such ease! Thanks so much for your generosity and love for all people. <3

    Many blessings, Linda

    Jodi Edwards says:

    Tracy,
You are so inspiring. I just yesterday posted on FB that my mother, who passed away in 2005 had breast cancer at 28, lifelong Thyroid disease, mismanaged by a prescription for synthroid, leading to diabetes, ( insulin) heart disease ( more drugs) triple bypass at 51, vascular disease, hysterectomy from fibroids… Nowhere on her health journey was there a single doctor who ever tried to figure out what was going on with her or offered her any hope she could do anything to feel better never mind heal. From my earliest memories I embraced health, exercise food choices, yoga, stress management and became a voracious consumer and sharer of information to empower people to help themselves and gain confidence to self advocate. I became a lawyer to help people as well and passionately want to make headway on what standard of care means to at a minimum encourage if not require doctors to inform patients that while they may not have the answers as to whether food or lifestyle can impact chronic disease, since their training didn’t address that, they should look into it. So many people tell me their doctor told them what they eat or do has nothing to do with their “disease” .. You are a champion in delivering such amazing content and I just love learning more from you. for over 40 years I have managed to ” fix ” myself from misdiagnoses each decade of Lupus, IBS, Waldstroms etc. and always through my own trial and error, my blood levels of various things would return to normal. Intuitively I always rejected the ” diagnosis, listened to my body and inevitably healed and learned more. I am so appreciative that we live in a time where gaining the tools to put the pieces of our own unique puzzle together can be found and that we can help and empower others that healing IS not only possible but probable! Thank you again for your message, knowledge, delivery and generosity. I appreciate you and always learn so much from you. Beta blockers melatonin connection was priceless! Best in health always!

    Cynthia says:

I’d just like to begin by saying how much you inspire me Tracy! I sometimes fall short of believing I can really help people to heal. I’m a health coach, graduate of IIN Fall of 2017, I have worked with both paying and non paying clients who have come to me for help with auto immune issues, diabetes, gut issues, problems with weight and more…When I listen to you speak you motivate me, because although I know I have been able to help people understand how to make changes in their diet, I have never been able to help them find the root cause or source of their “dis-ease”. I am passionate about helping people to find the help they desperately need and guide them towards the answers they seek. How can I learn to do that better? That is my question, but I think I know the answer…
In order to do that I need to acquire more knowledge about functional medicine. I love listening to you speak and I always learn something that is useful to me with my health coaching practice. I have been itching to enroll at SAFM and hope to do so in the up coming future (still paying off IIN). Thank you for your passion and commitment. I’m keeping my fingers crossed to win!!

amazed at the side effects from drugs and how they rob us of minerals and nutrients and how they can have lasting effects in the body. I never thought to ask what the client was taking in previous years. Thank you. Information is motivating and invaluable.

    Hi Tracy,
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and pearls with us again today; this is a huge gift as it is so rare nowadays to have generous-minded people like you to help the community and the humanity to be happier and healthier…
I just get certified yesterday from the FMCA as a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach and I would love to dig deeper thanks to The Core 101 Semester Signature Program into the fascinating world of FM which is my true passion!
Thank you for offering the opportunity to participate in this contest and I wish everyone good luck!

    Alicia Craig-Rodriguez says:

Great session today! I was so grateful for the pearls you shared regarding 3 commonly used medications (Beta blockers, Warfarin and NSAIDs and the downstream effects of each. Especially the Beta-blockers. Wow. Perhaps the best pearl you offered today, Tracy, is that our patients and clients, deep down, often know the root cause of their illness, and if they are in an environment of mutual trust, they will tell us. Very powerful and often overlooked tool. Thanks…Ali

    Rita Panahi says:

I love all of the talks but this one was probably one of my favorites.
So many people are taking medications who don’t even think about the long term side effects
and so many practitioners are not even taking those side effects into account when looking at
their over all health or why something else is now wrong.
Too many pearls to list but one was: betablockers being secondary to insomnia! and betablockers and their impact on melatonin decrease.

    Kim Snyder says:

Thank you for such great information. I loved learning about insomnia and how so many other roads can lead to insomnia then I ever thought possible. I loved all the little nuggets and pearls as you say, it really got my mind thinking and expanding, I loved it. Never thought about all the interconnectedness around insomnia. I’ve been on such a great journey these past 3 years in my studies and practice with clients this information starts to bring everything together (puzzle pieces!) and look forward to learning more. Thank you again.

    Vicki Sarnoff says:

Thank you for this fascinating and informative presentation. I always learn so much from your website, blogs and talks. One question:
How does a patient deal with the issue of being prescribed warfarin after a stroke as a preventative to having another stroke? There is fear connected with the possibility of another stoke and yet the impact of taking this medication is also filled with fear.

    Thanks,
    Vicki

    Kris Francefort says:

I love the over-arching theme of today’s presentations. Medicines can be used for triage with an “exit” plan, otherwise the long-term use will perpetuate the original health condition and bring about a cascade response from the body into a state of “dis-ease”. I’ve seen it happen several times, the first with my father who at the time of his death was on 13 different medications, many of which were prescribed to counter-balance the effects of previous drugs.

I look forward to each and every Facebook live by Tracy. Thank you for your dedication to the world of functional medicine.

    Alicia Berzins says:

    Tracy,

Once again, this is filled with great information that help me first and foremost understand MY OWN health issues due to long term use of medications. I’d love to hear at some point your wisdom about the long term use of statin drugs. I’ve been off of them for about 2 years now and feel a WORLD of difference with my muscles and aches and pains. I took them for over 10 years without much real difference with my cholesterol levels.

I’ve considered dropping out of the Core 101 because of $$, but after listening to this again, I know this is where I need to be. THIS Is the piece that is missing for me to not only help myself, but to also provide my clients with more information that will truly make a difference in their health moving forward. I’d love to win the FREE semester!!

I look forward to ALL this course has to offer for my own health and the health of countless others that I come in contact with!

THank you for your generosity!! You along with all of us are changing the world of health CARE as we currently know it!!

    Michal Patten says:

I really resonated with your comment that we think we know more/can fool mother nature….but ultimately our attempts to do so will backfire. Helping our bodies restore proper function is always the best solution. My mother tells me that I was a very curious little kid, so solving puzzles of all kinds has long intrigued me. I cherish discovering each new piece and studying its contours and nuances so I can recognize where it will fit in another scenario. Thanks for showing the puzzle pieces in the context of puzzle.

    Vickie Redmon says:

Tracy, I so love your passion and enthusiasm. The FB live was very informative. I am a Health Coach, but I do not have the knowledge of what medications actually do to the body. I would love to learn more. I am grateful to have a chance to win a semester. Thank you for your time!

    Lori Folsom says:

Wonderful information gained during the live video! I had many “Aha” moments, especially with the beta-blocker discussion. So ready to know more as I feel that deep in my soul what I have learned in nearly 3 years of NP school is NOT how I want to manage my patients in my future practice. My only reason for pursuing NP was to make myself more marketable and to use the credentials as I intend to pursue FM just as soon as I graduate in November. Many thanks for giving me a taste and a positive preview of my future!! I wish to know the herbs that can be used to calm the stomach in a colitis diagnosis. Many thanks!
