I am so excited to share this Facebook Live with you. All current practitioners – both newcomers and veterans to functional medicine science – are welcome. I bring you fresh knowledge and insight into the functional medicine interconnectedness at play with some fascinating case examples of the (often huge) difference between treating disease and reversing root causes.
At SAFM we teach our students to be both confident and highly skilled at “puzzle piecing” and finding the interconnectedness between the pieces of each patient’s unique case. This approach makes all the difference in the world in your business. Because here’s a truth you need to hear: Absence of symptoms and true health are NOT the same thing. We’ve got to be willing to dive into the detailed and unique interconnectedness for each person.
Thank you very much for joining in on the fun and learning!
With warmth, love, and gratitude to you for sharing your gifts with so many,
P.S. If you are passionate about transforming healthcare through the power of functional medicine, we encourage you to learn more about SAFM’s practitioner training programs. Enrollment for our next cohort is now open!

Very informative & supportive of previous studies particularly regarding the “Beta Blocker/Melatonin/Insomnia” cycle. Makes me curious as to how many
other commonly prescribed drugs may have the same effect, seeing
as “insomnia” has become quite prevalent in today’s fast paced,
high anxiety producing society.
Thank you again for the vast insight into the body! I definitely did not know the information about beta-blockers!
Tracy,
Firstly thank you for providing this platform of knowledge on FB. I like many of the other practitioners listening appreciate your generosity in providing such insight and pearls of wisdom. What greatly inspired me is how much I learnt in terms of practical application just from todays talk. Your re-enforcement of the importance of doing the necessary puzzle piecing is priceless. It would be a dream to be able to learn more in your Core 101 course.
Sincere gratitude for today I have learnt a lot and would love to continue.
Wow. NSAIDS…I really these drugs as a real problem, because they create a real slippery slope in ones own health and wellness. I work on an acute mental health unit at a local hospital, and routinely give this class of medication to patients, as per doctor’s orders, on a daily basis. Many of the patients I serve get both scheduled daily doses as well as have access to PRN doses over extended periods of time. In part I blame the medical model that I am part of for creating the resulting down stream dis ease that often results from over use of NSAIDS. Patients want a pill for every ill, and often there isn’t time for education and for supporting patients to try healthier, holistic options. One of the problems that I see with seining someone off NSAIDS is the often immediate return of inflammation and pain that led the patient to accept NSAIDS in the first place, in addition to the additional side effects brought on by chronic misuse of same. It can be a vicious circle. I often feel like I am so time restricted in my nursing practice, and under-supported by my co-workers, who sometimes think I should mind my own business and just give the patient what he or she wants for instant refill without looking at the long term, cumulative negative effects of pushing NSAIDS to a number of unsuspecting and blissfully ignorant public.
As an herbalist I am always looking for safe yet effective natural options for clients and their health concerns. I was intrigued with the functional approach as I did not want to practice from a “green allopathy” approach! So a functional herbalist was born 😉
I am so grateful for all your knowledge and clinical pearls, links to research, and comprehensive talks or case studies that allow me plenty of a-ha! moments and opportunities to expand my knowledge.
In particular today (although always too many to really put down!) was the reminder to look beyond current medications and to dive further back in their history when not seeing results I may expect!
And, as always, the reminder “you are what you absorb!” I love seeing the light bulb moment in my clients when I explain this.
I would love the opportunity to study with you and thank you for the chance to win a semester!
Thank you again and have a great day!
Farrah
I like how you said a medication can become part of the problem over time. I’ve definitely seen cases where a client’s main complaint (such as fatigue) is a known side effect of a medication they’re taking.
Hi! Apologies if this comes through twice – thunderstorm came through and power went out as I was commenting earlier lol! Thank you Tracy for your pearls 🙂 I enjoy listening and learning from you. I agree that conventional medicine is important and love that functional medicine focuses on finding the root cause of dis-ease. I also thought the NSAID’s connection to the gut and inflammation was interesting and wanting to learn more about that topic. Thanks!
Tracy, thank you for your Live videos! They are truly amazing, packed with so much useful information! Your enthusiasm is contagious. I have started falling in love with functional medicine and hope to start Core 101 soon! I am learning a lot listening to you, and becoming convinced that small changes in our daily lifestyle and diet lead to much better health.
With much appreciation, Olga Rolund
Over the past few years, I have sought to support my husband’s journey to improve his health concerns with high blood pressure and elevated triglycerides and cholesterol. He is taking multiple medications still despite the improvements in his numbers, weight, and lifestyle choices. So today, was a bit of hope that there may be an answer that does not involve the medications that we do not know (as Tracy pointed out) the long term use implications. Knowing a list of side effects does not help me know the actions to take that may allow him to live symptom free without these added risks. Is there an answer? I am now hopeful there is.
Of course, as a health coach, I long to have effective ways of supporting my clients to their best health also. However, there is little that motivates us more than our desire for our family to thrive!
Thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge with me and the world. It would be a wonderful blessing to have access to this information.
Love all the information. You are an inspiration to me as a coach. By day I work with chronically ill seniors on sooooo many prescription medications. It is scary that many times they have lost track of why, when and what the original symptoms were when they needed the prescription. As a coach it is an interesting line to walk when discussing symptoms/medications/ and relationship with dis-ease they are experiencing.
Love learning with you thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
Another great talk, Tracy! I enjoy absorbing all the information you give. Yes, people have no idea the long term side effects of medication. Didn’t know about the Beta Blockers and sleep, but I’m not surprised. This is the main thing my clients want is to not be reliant on prescription medication as they age. I am 66 and am not on any prescription medication, nor do I have any health condition to warrant it. I love teaching people how to remain healthy well into their 80’s, and 90’s and even beyond. The body may slow down a bit, but chronic conditions can be prevented. The challenge I am dealing with is that when people come to me, they are in such bad shape. I think a program like yours could help we deal with those challenging people. Thank you for all you do. I would love to work with you but don’t have the finances at this time. So if I am lucky enough to win a Core 101 semester that would help so much. Thank you.
Hello.. What a great session. I want to know everything you know. I liked the pearl about Non steroid anti inflammatory drugs damaging the gut lining…. Love being part of this.. Jannette
Thank you so much Tracy – I love your enthusiasm and vast knowledge of healing the human body. I always learn so much in these Fb live videos and I am so grateful to have access to them. I am an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and would SO love to extend my knowledge to further help clients by doing a Core 101 Semester Course at SAFM. I found the talk about calcium fascinating. My husband has calcium build up in his arteries, and has been put on a high dose of statins, which he has been on for years. I’m terrified of the side effects and long term damage it could do to him.
I really appreciated the discussion of appropriate use of some of the drugs you mentioned. When they make sense and when they are just an excuse so the provider doesn’t have to dig deeper and the patient take any responsibility. I will be listening to this again!
Again as always thank you Tracy for this live! The more I hear you speak the more excited I get for September to come for the fall semester! Hey new student here! Wow so many takeaways but for me was the beta blockers. Wow I did not that at all. Again thank you and I can’t wait to start next month!
Tracy as always thank you for taking the time out of your day to share these valuable pearls with us! You definitely put some perspective on the fact of how conventional medicine can play into our lives, such as an issue where someone could have an infectious issue that needs to be treated right way OR if you have a long term dis-ease with ongoing use of medicines, which can help one thing, but long term cause other issues down the road; you’re preaching to the choir on this one!! I”m really hoping I can join you guys for the Core 101 sememster in 2019!!
Dear Tracy, thank you so much! You are an incredible person, very energetic and look like a jeweled casket with unique knowledge! I recently started working as a nutritionist and health-coach, and I dream to deepen my knowledge of functional medicine! Today there was a lot of useful information for me and for many people over the whole world! All the things that you spoke are so hot! And how important is the topic of taking diuretics! Very often we try to treat one thing, but it’s so-so important to look at the whole picture of the organism and understand that the medicine can mask one problem, but does harm elsewhere. You have absolutely right! Our task is to collect together pieces of the puzzle piece, to see the root cause! Gold words!!
I’m from Russia, now I’m trying to learn functional medicine by myself. I began to study it when I faced serious problems with my health, I had the last level of adrenal exhaustion! This knowledge is very valuable and I want to use it to help others! Unfortunately, in Russia, few people know about functional medicine, and classical medicine leaves much to be desired in its approach. And, of course, I hope to have a chance to help more people with this valuable knowledge! With great pleasure I will listen to you and learn from you, if there is such opportunity for me!
Thank you 🙂

What most inspired me is the breadth and depth of knowledge- I would love to be able to speak as eloquently about the systems of the body and the missing pieces that conventional medicine does not address. That level of certainty brings such a recognition of professionalism that even the most skeptic folks have to take notice!
